Basic Boatbuilding Skills
Comprehensive video material covering the skills you will need to get started building or restoring a boat:
- Understanding boat plans and basic lofting.
- Finding good boatbuilding wood.
- Boatbuilding terminology
- How to set up a workshop for boatbuilding
- The tools you will need for boat work
- Edge tool sharpening
- Setting up and using hand planes
- Cutting straight with a hand saw
- Precise measuring and marking
- How to fasten wood, using screws, nails, rivets and glues
- How to set up and use a bandsaw
- How to use a jointer and a thickness planer.
- How to make plank patterns ("spiling")
- How to steam bend and install lapstrake planks
Shop Projects
A growing catalog of woodworking, metalworking and ropework projects designed to help you grow your boatbuilding skills:
- The first membership project is The Boatbuilder's Tool Tote. This project covers a whole array of key boatbuilding skills, such as cutting accurate joinery with hand tools, steam bending, spar making, working with rolling bevels etc.
- New shop projects are released every month.
Monthly live Q&A session
- All members are invited to submit questions per email
- Live video session is held the first Friday every month at 6PM UTC, hosted by Small Boat School instructor Mikkel Pagh
- If you can't make it to the live session, the recording will be available at the member web site.
