How to build a cam clamp for lapstrake boatbuilding

May 19, 2023

When you're planking a lapstrake boat, this type of clamp can be very handy.

It's lightweight and has a deep jaw, which makes it ideal for holding two overlapping planks together while riveting or clench nailing.

The cam mechanism makes it very quick and easy to engage and release.

The tool takes a little bit of time to build, but it will last a lifetime (or longer) and if you have a few scraps of wood, an old bandsaw blade and a couple of nails, the building materials are already there.
